Abstract
In tertiary education contexts motivating high-level learners becomes crucial to their academic success as the current emphasis on preparation for standardized test has failed to incentivize them. The solution we propose is critical thinking as a theory underlying the teaching/learning process, which shifts the focus from teach-to-test university curricula to task-based learning. This approach fosters students’ autonomy and enhances motivation because it is reflective of their academic work. Language learning is well placed to develop essential life skills, critical thinking being among the most important ones.
