The Future of EU Labour Law: Insights from Christian Ethics

Abstract

This article explores the contribution that Christian Ethics can potentially make to debates on the future of EU labour law. It begins by reviewing the trajectory of EU labour law in recent years. There are tentative signs that the space for initiatives in this field has grown after a difficult period during the financial crisis. In considering debates on the future of work, it reflects on whether there is a role for insights derived from religiously-inspiring thinking. Notably, Article 17 TEU provides a framework for policy dialogue that includes the perspectives of religious organisations. Finally, the article examines what contribution might be made through an engagement with Christian Ethics. Drawing upon Catholic Social Teaching, it argues that there is the prospect of beneficial insights through such a dialogue. These can help illuminate neglected areas of EU labour law (such as the idea of a just wage) and they can aid in the application of timeless principles to new contexts (such as the right to rest and leisure).
