Abstract

English Abstract: This meeting was held with the Palestinian poet Hilmi Zawati as part of a cultural week in Khartoum in October 1984 at the invitation of the Sudanese Writers’ Union. This week included several lectures at the Friendship Hall and the University of Khartoum, poetry reciting at the Grand Hotel and the Institute of African and Asian Studies at the University of Khartoum, and several journalistic and televised press interviews.

In this interview with the al-Ayyām newspaper, Zawati touched upon the sufferings of the Palestinian people under occupation and in the diaspora. He also spoke bitterly about the massacres of Sabra and Shatila in Beirut, carried out on September 14, 1982, by the militias of the Lebanese Christian Forces against the Palestinian refugees with the support of the Israeli army besieging Beirut. In this discussion, Zawati pointed out that the Arab regimes’ silence on what happened to the Palestinians in Beirut was no less painful than the Israeli shelling of the Palestinian refugee camps during the Battle of Beirut.

He also discussed his novel Sailing in the Memory of the Homeland “in Arabic الإبحار في ذاكرة الوطن” and other works. Moreover, he discussed the concept of modernity in poetry and challenges facing the Arabic poem. He also commented on the first Umma Poetry Festival, which was held in Baghdad in 1984 during the fierce battles between the Iraqi and Iranian armies.
