Abstract

In the structural frame system, the concept that has become a reference is the concept of "strong columns weak beam". Each building structure system has the property of being deformed in the lateral direction, so the role of the column is very important compared to the beam, especially in resisting cyclic lateral loads. Several proposals have been made by previous researchers to improve column ductility by utilizing fine mesh, increasing reinforcement strength, various shapes of confinement, and even using different configurations of confinement systems. For this reason, the authors analyze the potential of these possibilities to determine the strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities to obtain the shape and configuration of the confinement system, which is expected to be better when compared to the current existing confinement system.

The results of the potential analysis carried out have obtained an initial hypothesis that the increase in strength and ductility depends on increasing the area of the concrete core by making an adaptable and compatible shape of confinement with columns to obtain an effective concrete core area, compact shape of confinement, avoiding the connection points at confinement in the corner area, reducing the curvature of the concrete core and utilizing interlocking systems to maintain the cohesiveness of the reinforcement system.

From the initial hypothesis, a rectangular confinement proposal emerged to adapt to the shape of the column and maximize the area of the concrete core, spiral-shaped to avoid breaking the reinforcing bar and the connection point in the confining angle and utilizing reinforcement bundling in the corner area to minimize the curvature of the concrete core and utilizing an interlocking system to maintain cohesiveness between the main confinement (concrete core) and second confinement (bundles).
