El contexto social y la comprensión psicoterapéutica en la transexualidad (The Social Context and the Psychotherapeutic Understanding of Transsexuality)

Abstract

Spanish Abstract: La transexualidad ha ocupado diferentes espacios dentro de la teoría psicológica presentando tratamientos y posturas que han evolucionado en múltiples direcciones, lo que plantea la disyuntiva acerca de la posición que asumen los psicoterapeutas hacia la persona transexual en su ámbito profesional. En esta publicación se presentan resultados de una investigación realizada en Venezuela, cuyo objetivo fue comprender el significado de la transexualidad para los psicoterapeutas haciendo énfasis en sus opiniones respecto a la despatologización, sus experiencias de aproximación al tratamiento y las implicaciones que este puede tener para su persona. En esta emergió la importancia del contexto social como mediador para la comprensión psicoterapéutica de esta condición, la cual será el aspecto a desarrollar en este artículo.

Los conceptos de género, patologización y despatologización se ubicaron como elementos centrales de la discusión de esta categoría. Se realizaron entrevistas a profundidad a una muestra de psicoterapeutas que fueron analizadas por medio de la comparación constante dentro de un paradigma construccionista.

Entre las conclusiones se destacan la rigidez del concepto dicotómico de género como una barrera para la aceptación de la diversidad sexual, la estigmatización como principal problema frente a la despatologización y la importancia de «lo distinto» como criterio patologizante.

English Abstract: Transsexuality has occupied different scenarios within psychological theories. Different treatments and theories had emerged in clinical approaches raising the question about what psychotherapists think about transsexuals regarding their professional field. This article presents some findings of a research conducted in Venezuela, whose objective was to understand the meaning of transsexuality for psychotherapists, highlighting their opinions about depathologization, their experience in treatment and the implications this may have for themselves. During the investigation, the relevance of the social context —which will be discussed in this paper—as a mediator for the psychotherapeutic understanding of this condition proved to play an important role.

Concepts such as gender, pathologization, and depathologization were located as key elements within the discussion. In-depth interviews were carried out to a sample of psychotherapists and subsequently were analyzed through constant comparative method under a ‘constructionist’ paradigm. Among the relevant conclusions, we found the rigidity of the dichotomic concept of gender as a barrier for welcoming sexual diversity, the stigmatization as the main problem for the depathologization, and the relevance of ‘the different’ as pathologizing criterion.
