Clinical Characteristics of 457 Cases with Coronavirus Disease 2019

Background: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is spreading across the globe. Previous studies suggest clinical characteristics of COVID-19, however, few large individuals have been reported. We identified and combined all available data to described demographic, epidemiologic, and clinical features.
Methods: All patients with diagnosed with COVID-19 were included, and demographic epidemiological, clinical, laboratory, and outcome variable data were extracted.
Findings: A total of 457 patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 between December 30, 2019 and January 31, 2020 were identified. The men accounted for 267 (58%) and 98 (21%) patients had Huanan seafood wholesale market exposure, Hankou exposure or contact with infected person. The most common comorbidities are cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and hypertension. Main signs and symptoms included fever (89%), cough (63%) and myalgia or fatigue (51%). Vast majority (86%) had bilateral distribution of patchy shadows or ground glass opacity. 278 patients reported complications among 457 patients, acute respiratory distress syndrome was the most common. 428 patients reported treatment received. Antiviral, antibacterial, glucocorticoid and immunoglobulin use rates were 77%, 56%, 28%, and 16%, respectively. And oxygen therapy is the most commonly used treatment. There were 143 cases in inpatient treatment, 195 in improved and discharged, and 35 in death, respectively, among 283 patients.
Interpretation: COVID-19 was of clustering onset, and can result in severe and even fatal respiratory diseases such as acute respiratory distress syndrome. Combination therapy may be effective.
