Epidemiological Feature and Outcome of 292 Hospitalized Patients with COVID-19 Under Adequate Medical Resource Condition

Abstract

Background: In December 2019, a novel acute respiratory disease occurred in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province, China. Demographic data of COVID-19 patients in regions with adequate medical resource is scarce. Thus, we aim to describe the clinical characteristics and outcome of 292 confirmed patients in regions with adequate medical resource, and discussed the difference clinical characteristics, therapeutic effect and outcome between patients with and without underlying diseases.

Method: COVID-19 case reports by NHC and WHO were analyzed. The epidemiological features of COVID-19 and medical resources were compared between Hubei and regions outside Hubei. Total 292 patients with COVID-19 in Guangzhou were enrolled. The epidemiological and demographic data including basic information (sex, aged, etc), laboratory values, clinical outcome of patients were recorded and analyzed. The epidemiological feature and clinical outcome were compared between patients with and without underlying diseases.

Finding: The deteriorating condition of 2019-nCoV in Wuhan-Hubei related to inadequate medical resource. Under the adequate medical condition, 15·41% of 292 laboratory-confirmed cases patients are critical illness, 15·56% critical patients need mechanical ventilation, and 33·33% critical patients are cured after average 10 days in ICU. Patients without underlying diseases shows higher cured rate (113 [61·50%] patients vs 46 [42·20%] patients) and lower critical rate (26 [23·85%] patients vs 19 [10·38%] patients) than patients with underlying diseases.

Interpretation: This study suggested that early prevention and preparation of adequate medical source can prevent the outbreak of 2019-nCoV. Furthermore, our study gives clinical clues that physician should pay more attention on patients with underlying diseases, especially patients with poor lung function.
