L’Intelligenza Artificiale, protagonista silenzioso ed efficiente nella lotta al Coronavirus (Artificial Intelligence, Silent and Efficient Protagonist in the Fight against Coronavirus)

Abstract

Italian Abstract: La crisi della Covid-19 ha costretto le nostre società a investire rapidamente nelle nuove tecnologie. Una di queste è l'Intelligenza Artificiale (IA), che ha dimostrato come le nuove tecnologie possano aiutare l'umanità a gestire situazioni difficili. Il suo utilizzo durante l'epidemia è stato variegato e ha interessato molti campi. È stata usata per individuare se le persone hanno sintomi di Covid-19, per monitorare le variazioni di temperatura, per trasportare merci evitando il contatto umano, per il tracciamento ed il controllo sulla circolazione del virus, per vedere come il virus si sarebbe potuto comportare, e per rilevare notizie false che circolano liberamente sui social media e su internet. Tuttavia, i diritti fondamentali come il diritto alla privacy possono essere a rischio. Molte preoccupazioni e dubbi sta infatti destando l'uso del riconoscimento facciale da parte di Cina e Russia. Senza dubbio, la crisi del Coronavirus ha dato a questi Paesi la possibilità di accelerare la sorveglianza di massa e di aumentare l'intrusione nella privacy dei suoi cittadini. Il presente lavoro analizza i vari usi dell'IA nella lotta contro il Coronavirus. Partendo dalle applicazioni nei settori sanitari, nella seconda parte analizza come l'IA viene utilizzata come fonte d'informazione, diffondendo conoscenze e verificando le cd. fake news. Nell'ultima parte, l'articolo mostra quali sono le preoccupazioni e le questioni relative all'IA ed i suoi usi ai tempi del Coronavirus: soprattutto in relazione all'utilizzo dei dati e la fiducia verso tali tecnologie.

English Abstract: The COVID-19 crisis has forced our societies to rapidly invest in new emerging technologies. One of them is Artificial Intelligence (AI), which has shown how new technologies could help humanity to handle difficult situations. Its usage during the outbreak is various and has affected many fields. It has been used to spot if people have COVID-19 symptoms, to monitor temperature changes, to transport goods avoiding human contact, to give data to track and see the spread of the virus itself, to preview how the virus is going to act, and detect fake news that circulate freely on social media and the internet. However, fundamental rights as the right to privacy may be at risk. As example, many concerns and doubts are rising on the use of facial recognition by China and Russia. Indeed, the Coronavirus crisis has given to these countries the chance to accelerate mass surveillance and increase intrusion over life‟s citizens. The present work analyses the various uses of AI in the fight against Coronavirus. Starting from the applications in the health sectors, it also explores how AI is being used as a source of information, spreading knowledge and debunking fake news, and how totalitarian regimes are using these technologies to exercise control over the citizenship. In the last part, the article shows which are the concerns and issues related to AI and its application in the time of Coronavirus: notably the problem of trust and how data are used.
