Abstract

English abstract: In any education system that is based on meritocratic standards, school grades should primarily depend on subject specific performance. It is well known that this ideal can be undermined and other factors can have an independent effect on grades. This raises the question of which factors influence year-end grades to what extent and how meritocratic the German secondary school system as a whole is. Using data from the NEPS, which contains five survey years, multilevel analyses are conducted for the subjects Mathematics and German to test how strong the effect of subject specific performance is on the grade received. It is demonstrated that subject-specific competence, which is operationalized by the competence tests of the NEPS, is the most important predictor of the grade. However, even taking into account various control variables, it can explain significantly less than 50% of the total variance. Social background in German also has an effect on the grade, independent of performance. Further dominance analyses show that the motivation of the child in particular, but also socio-demographic characteristics have an effect on the grades.
