Modelling Prevalence of Dementia and Hearing Loss in Scotland

Abstract
Since the Lancet Commission 2017 hearing loss is considered a modifiable risk factor for dementia. To plan service provisions for people with both conditions as exact as possible estimates are needed. These estimates of people with both conditions can be achieved by using the prevalence rates of two existing models, one for hearing loss and one for dementia. These models differ in the age groups they give numbers for. Additionally prevalence rates need population estimates to deliver approximate counts. Government statistics also come in differing age groups. To fit all these age groups together we develop a mathematical model. We develop this model so it can be applied to the combination of the interaction of these two human ageing processes and for hearing loss and dementia alone. As such we make the age-group limiting tables applicable to all forms of population data that comes in year by year estimates. We also high light that the Stannard model we use is capturing biological reality as it belongs in a class of models that describe many biological processes.
