Abstract

This study is based on a 1996 survey of Ph.D. economists who had worked in the academic and nonacademic sectors since 1989. Despite a raw gender difference in salaries, occupation, and publication rates, regression analysis reveals very few gender differences in measures of career success, once controls are added. There are, however, substantial gender differences in time use, workplace preferences, and in methods of integrating work with family life.
