Abstract

Adopting a historical study and qualitative analysis of the literature as the major methodologies, this paper aimed to review the life story of Khaw Sim Bee and to analyze his role in the economic and social development in Southern Thailand. Khaw Sim Bee was an outstanding representative who reflected the advantages of overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia and their contributions to international exchanges and cooperation. It is also worth noting that most of the ASEAN countries are in key positions of the China-proposed ‘Belt and Road’ (B & R) initiative and China is now a very important trade partner for ASEAN. In order to make the past serve the present, this paper further expounds the importance of overseas Chinese in ASEAN countries in the face of the weak recovery of the global economy and complex international and regional situations. The work presented in this paper concludes that the overseas Chinese in ASEAN countries have the advantages of cultural tolerance, economic strength and organizational network, from which they can inject new positive energy into the regional and global development with the progress of the ‘B & R’ initiative.
