Abstract

This research is dedicated to experimentally study the nonlinear seismic behavior of composite coupled RC shear walls strengthened by Carbon Fiber Reinforcement Polymer (CFRP). For this purpose, the structure is tested in different two states of using CFRP sheets for retrofitting and strengthening. At the first state, three specimens of composite coupled shear walls are strengthened by CFRP sheets based on three various patterns. In the second state, three other specimens are constructed and tested without using CFRP sheets. Afterwards, these structures are subjected to a load equivalent to 60% of structure flexural capacity. Then, the tested specimens are retrofitted by using CFRP sheets based on the same various patterns used in the previous state. Finally, these retrofitted composite coupled shear walls are tested again. The primary aim of retrofitting with CFRP sheets is to enhance the flexural and shear capacities of specimens so that they can be subjected to higher seismic load in comparison with the other design ones. The main contribution of these experiments is to evaluate the ductility, ultimate strength, energy dissipation and construction cost of composite coupled steel plate-concrete shear walls. It should be mentioned that all specimens are subjected to cyclic loading according to ATC-24 guidelines. Finally, a parametric study is implemented to investigate the effects of using CFRP sheets and their adhesion patterns on the seismic behavior of composite coupled shear walls. Due to select the optimum scheme of retrofitting, the construction cost of each specimen is determined according to amount of total CFRP sheet area.
