Use and Impact of Social Media on Academic Performance of Kurukshetra University Students: A Case Study

Abstract

This research paper assesses the use of social media and its impact on students’ academic performance studying at Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra, Haryana, India. The questionnaire was used for the collection of data. The 150 copies of the questionnaire were distributed, 120 were retrieved, which represented a response rate of 80 %. The research study revealed that most of the respondents had mobile phones with Internet facilities and had knowledge of many social media sites and mobile applications. The study further confirmed that most respondents visit their social media sites using their mobile phones and spend time between 30 minutes to 3 hours per day.

The study also revealed that the use of social media sites and mobile application had negatively affected the student's academic performance and that there was a direct relationship between the use of social media sites and their academic performance. The study recommends that students with mobile phones should be encouraged to use them to supplement their research in the library rather than the usual chatting with friends and family members. Students should also be encouraged to spend more time reading novels and books rather than spending most of their time on social media. The use of social media sites has affected the academic performance of students negatively. Hence, there is an urgent need for the introduction of students to the available educational resources in the library.
