Abstract

This essay reviews Diversity and Self-Determination in International Law by Karen Knop. In doing so, it undertakes an experiment in what Knop terms the practice of reading. This experiment involves reading Knop's book through Beyond Good and Evil: Prelude to a Philosophy of the Future by Friedrich Nietzsche. The staged encounter between these two books raises many questions, four of which are addressed here. These four questions revolve loosely around the relationship between diversity and self-determination in international law.

Keywords: International law, diversity, self-determination, international legal theory, Nietzsche, Knop
