[Laughter.] on the Supreme Court: Expanding on Professor Wexler's 'Laugh Track'

8 Pages Posted: 7 May 2006

Abstract

The recent decision to include individual Supreme Court justices' names in the oral argument transcripts prompted Jay Wexler to analyze humor on the court by counting which justices elicited the most laughs per argument session. This article takes his analysis a step further, determining which justices are funniest on a per-comment basis. Further, oral argument sessions are categorized in various ways, including by day of the week and by identity of presiding justice, to determine whether these variables have an effect on the humor of individual justices or of the court as a whole.
