Abstract

This article analyzes the key legal vocabulary contained in the Tellicherry Records, a set of official correspondence between British officials and their colonial subjects in the region of South India called Malabar (now Kerala) from 1796-1800. More than 1500 records are preserved in Malayalam, the language of the region. Three key terms - kalpana, maryada, nyayam - are in focus and provide insight into the legal consciousness of Kerala (and perhaps India) at the moment of transition to colonial rule.

Keywords: Indian law, Kerala, colonialism
