As a Last Resort, Ask the Students: What They Say Makes Someone an Effective Law Teacher

Abstract

My article discusses the results of a 300+ law student survey that asked them to describe the personality traits, classroom behaviors and personal characteristics that they believe makes someone an effective law teacher. The survey shows that law students at all levels desire a teacher who sets high standards, is an expert in her field, projects confidence in her knowledge of the subject matter, and has a passion for teaching. Students disfavor teachers who allow class discussion to stray, who engage them in activities outside of school and who treat them with disrespect.
