Abstract

Adoption of information technology has lead to more intense information sharing between supply chain partner. Collaboration of whole supply chain network will need to exchange, share and manage information across the value chain. This information exchange initially takes form on a structured massage called by EDI ( electronic data interchange). EDI traffic grew rapidly during the 1980s and 1990s. However, only small percentage of all companies in the world have adopted EDI since it consumes a lot of cost for Small Medium Enteprise (SME). The introduction of XML technology has helped SME to conduct integration with bigger company by spending relatively small cost of investment. In the process of this integration, usually different applications and components are involved. Now, if those applications do not support a common protocol standard, there is the risk that these applications and components will not be interoperable. As a result there are always one or more business partners who will not be able to participate in a collaborative business environment due to the use of proprietary standards. The disadvantages of legacy and proprietary technologies being used to integrate applications, to perform distributed computing or simply used for communication can be compensated or even overcome by web Services.
