The Amsterdam Centre for European Studies (ACES) aims to become a world-leading interdisciplinary centre of excellence in research, education and public debate on contemporary Europe, the European Union, and its member states. ACES is a partnership between four faculties of the University of Amsterdam: Economics and Business, Humanities, Law, and Social and Behavioural Sciences. It tackles urgent questions concerning the dynamics and direction of contemporary Europe and the European Union, such as the future of the Economic and Monetary Union and the social dimension of European integration; reconciling functional pressures for uniform rules across integrated European markets with respect for legitimate national diversity; the rise of populism, euroscepticism, and identity politics; the challenge of illiberal democracies to the rule of law within and beyond the EU; the EU's relations with its troubled neighbourhoods, and its role as a global actor in a world of increasingly contested multilateralism. The ACES Research Paper Series includes contributions from its five interdisciplinary Theme Groups: Governing Europe, Socio-Economic Challenges, Politics and Publics, Diverse Europe and Europe in the World.
