Description
Johns Hopkins SAIS-KSAS-CAREY Geoeconomics Conference - Call For Papers
Conference dates: Friday-Saturday, 2-3 May 2025
Location: Johns Hopkins University Campus, 555 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC.
Keynote Speaker: Matteo Maggiori, The Moghadam Family Professor of Finance at Stanford Graduate School of Business, Stanford University.
We invite submissions of completed research papers in the areas of international economics and finance, economic history, political economy, and political science broadly focused on the economics of international competition and conflict. We are particularly interested in early-stage papers that would benefit from feedback and discussion on the following topics:
• Theoretical models and historical accounts of hegemonic power dynamics
• International trade and capital flows in the context of geopolitical conflict
• Reserve currency status, government bond markets, and war
• Arm races and productivity
• Optimal tariff, industrial, and capital account policies in the context of deglobalization and geopolitical conflict
• Theoretical and empirical analysis of national security policies (design and the effects)
• The economics of sanctions
Program: The conference will consist of 8-9 papers and a session for doctoral students. Doctoral students without faculty coauthors are encouraged to submit their papers for consideration in a special lightning-round session on Friday, May 2, 2025. Please indicate your interest in this session when you submit your paper. The conference will also feature a high-level roundtable discussion among current and former policymakers and senior scholars anchored by IMF Chief Economist Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas.
The submission deadline is Tuesday, January 7, 2025. We anticipate notifying the authors of selected papers by the end of January 2025. Submissions should be sent to jhu.geoeconomics@gmail.com, indicating the “PRESENTER_LASTNAME” in the subject line and the pdf file name.
We will provide lodging and economy-class travel for all presenters and discussants.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact jhu.geoeconomics@gmail.com.
