The role
The University of Bristol Business School invites applications for the position of Lecturer in Finance. This is a permanent position, subject to review.
Applications are sought from candidates with a PhD in Finance or a related field. Successful candidates will demonstrate a track record or potential for outstanding research and will be undertaking innovative work that complements and extends the School’s existing research and teaching activities.
What will you be doing?
You will be involved in a range of research and education activities in the newly formed Business School. In particular, you will:
Undertake research leading to publications in high quality international journals in the field of finance and/or related disciplines.
Undertake teaching and assessment on both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, contributing to curriculum development, course design, and the development and delivery of learning materials.
Act as personal tutor to undergraduate and/or postgraduate students.
Supervise dissertations at the postgraduate level.
Make a wider contribution to the success of the University through your participation in Faculty and University-wide governance and development activities.
Undertake other administrative duties as assigned by the Head of Group.
You should apply if
You have an in-depth subject knowledge in one or more of the following areas: financial markets, corporate finance, banking.
You hold a PhD in a relevant subject area (completed or nearing completion).
You have experience of teaching effectively at undergraduate, postgraduate or professional levels in a relevant discipline, in large and small-group settings.
You have a proactive approach to teaching.
You are capable of taking initiative to improve students’ learning.
You can evidence excellent organisational and administrative skills.
You have the ability to contribute effectively to the administration and management of the School and Faculty.

About the Organization
The Business School
Launched in September 2022 the Business School is the result of the merger of the Schools of
Management and Accounting & Finance, and is organised into the following groups:
• Accounting
• Finance
• Marketing & Consumption
• Operations and Management Science, Healthcare and Innovation
• Strategy, International Management & Business, and Entrepreneurship
• Work, Employment, Organisation and Public Policy.
The two schools have been growing significantly on the back of strong demand for our undergraduate
and postgraduate programmes and enhancement of our research portfolios. We have been actively
recruiting (30 academic staff in the past six months) and there are now more than 180 members of
academic staff. Future growth is planned, with relocation to state of the art learning and teaching
facilities at Temple Quarter.
Research in the Business School
Based in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law, we have a strong commitment to facilitating and
producing high quality and engaged research, often aimed at challenge-led interdisciplinary research
themes.
The 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) rated 88 per cent of the research in Business and
Management as 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent' (3*/4*).
Currently, research is organised in the following areas although work occurs across and beyond these
groups: accounting, sustainability and governance; banking; corporate finance, financial markets,
financial reporting and management accounting; sustainable production, inclusivity consumption and
economy; work futures; innovation and digitalisation; public services governance and management;
global political economy and; action research and critical inquiry (ARCIO).
Education in the Business School
The total student population of the Business School is around 3,600 students, which is currently split
evenly across undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Our undergraduate degree programmes attract
over 600 students a year who are of the very highest quality. Graduate numbers are expanding on a
range of specialist masters programmes and generalist conversion programmes.
The Business School structure and targeted growth areas will continue to be shaped through the Vice
Chancellor’s Business School Strategy Group. The Dean and Deputy Dean of the Business School help
facilitate this work through engagement and consultation with staff, students and other stakeholders
and develop the emerging strategy of the University of Bristol Business School.
The Business School will enable the University of Bristol to:
• Develop a coherent, distinctive, pluralist and compelling identity that will resonate nationally
and internationally ensuring alignment with the University’s civic and global ambitions.
• Diversify the portfolio to include generalist undergraduate business programmes, flexible
pathways, post-experience education and online business orientated courses.
• Deliver professional support which comes from scaling-up existing and anticipated teams for
marketing, communications, digital education and student experience.
• Increase enterprise and stakeholder partnering leveraging the broader range of subjects
offered under the business school umbrella to develop internships, work placements and
industrial partnerships.
• Attract and retain the best academic and professional services staff, including through a
business school specific recruitment and benefits offer for academic staff.
