Abstract

Called the Saʿdi of Hindustan even during his lifetime, after the author of the canonical Gulistan, the ghazals of Hasan Sijzi of Delhi (1254–1338) explore what it means to live outside the boundaries of any single creed. Hasan's poems frequently play multiple meanings — religious and profane, sacred and sexual — against each other. In originating the Indo-Persian ghazal, Hasan sought, and sometimes found, that space where language overcomes mortality. This article explores his life and the legacy of his literary innovations within South Asian culture.
